If you want to make the battery last longer on your Samsung device, then the auto-lock feature is great. It preserves energy by shutting your screen off.
The problem is, there are plenty of situations where this isn’t practical. If you use your Samsung tablet to help customers or visitors, such as checking in at an event or reception desk, then you don’t want the screen to go dark.
In most self-service kiosks or other customer use cases, the tablet will be plugged into the mains, so there’s no real need to preserve battery life.
Out-of-the-box, the Samsung Galaxy tablet auto-lock setting is 60 seconds.
If you want to override this and make sure your Samsung tablet screen stays on all the time, then you need to know how to turn the auto-lock feature off. Unfortunately, there’s no straightforward way to do this on Samsung devices. There are two main options you can use, as described below.
Option 1 – Allow “Keep Screen On While Viewing”
This option means that the device senses when somebody is looking at the screen and keeps it on for the duration. If you want your screen to be switched on at all times, this won’t work. If that’s the case, then move on to option two.
Step 1 – Open Settings
Drag your finger down from the top of the screen to open the menu bar and tap the little cog icon to open settings.
Step 2 – Tap on “Advanced features”
Scroll down until you see “Advanced features” and tap on it.
Step 3 – Select “Motions and gestures”
Tap to enter the “Motions and gestures” section.
Step 4 – Toggle “Keep screen on while viewing”
Tap to toggle on the “Keep screen on while viewing” option. This means your screen will always stay active, whenever someone is looking directly at it.
Option 2 – Use A Third Party App
If you want to make sure that the screen never dims on your Samsung Galaxy tablet or phone, then you need to use a third party app. You can download an app called “Caffeine” which allows you to set the screen timeout to “Infinite”, i.e. it will never turn off. Follow the steps below that guide you how to download and use the app.
Step 1 – Visit the Play store
Find the Play store icon on your device and tap it.
Step 2 – Download the Caffeine app
Search for “caffeine” and download the app.
Step 3 – Select “Timeout” option
Open the Caffeine app and tap on “Timeout”.
Step 4 – Set Timeout to “Infinite”
Select “Infinite” from the menu.
How This Affects Battery Life
If you set your screen to stay on when someone is viewing or never turn off, your battery will drain more quickly. In this case you’ll have to plug the tablet into the mains to keep the device on.
If you intend to use your Samsung tablet for customer-facing activities, such as a self-service kiosk, you’ll also need a tablet stand.
At Bouncepad, you’ll find a range of stylish tablet stands which are ideal for events, retail spaces, or offices. Our stands keep your device secure and hide the charging cable to prevent it from being unplugged.
